House Democrats criticized the Supreme Court justices who overturned federal abortion protections as “corrupt” and “extremist” during a press conference commemorating the one-year anniversary of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health ruling.

Rep. Barbara Lee, D-Calif., who is running for Senate, stated, “First of all, why we’re here today – because last June, we know that a handful of corrupt, extremist, hypocritical justices argued that the issue of abortion should be left to the states to decide. If the GOP cared about letting people decide their stance on abortion for themselves, they wouldn’t have banned the option for half the country.”

The Supreme Court’s conservative majority voted 5-4 to overturn the landmark 1973 case Roe v. Wade last June, while also voting 6-3 to uphold the Mississippi 15-week abortion ban in Dobbs.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., referred to last year’s ruling as “one of the most egregious and offensive decisions that the Supreme Court has ever rendered.”

Jeffries referred to the Dobbs decision as “Donald Trump’s Supreme Court,” comparing it to the historic Brown v. Board of Education case in 1954 that led to desegregation in schools. He claimed that unlike other enlightened decisions that have enhanced freedom, the Dobbs decision restricted and limited freedom for women across America.

Rep. Judy Chu, D-Calif., a leading advocate for codifying abortion protections into law with the Women’s Health Protection Act, criticized the court’s reputation, which has faced increased scrutiny in recent times.
