A German man, identified as Helge B., recently spoke out in an interview with the German newspaper Bild about his friendship with Christian Brueckner, the main suspect in the disappearance of British toddler Madeleine McCann. According to Helge, Brueckner accidentally confessed to kidnapping Madeleine several years ago during a conversation they had over drinks. Helge mentioned that during their discussion, the topic of Madeleine’s disappearance came up, and he expressed his confusion about how she could have disappeared without a trace. It was then that Brueckner, who had consumed a few beers, said, “She didn’t scream.” Helge’s immediate thought was that if Brueckner had that knowledge, he must have had some involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance.

Madeleine McCann was abducted from a ground-floor apartment while on a family vacation in Praia da Luz, Portugal on May 3, 2007, when she was only three years old. In 2020, German authorities named Christian Brueckner as a suspect in the case, but he continues to deny any involvement. Brueckner had spent a significant amount of time in Portugal, including in Praia da Luz, around the time of Madeleine’s disappearance.

Helge described Brueckner as a “nice” and “personable, sociable” man. Following Brueckner’s arrest in an unrelated case, Helge and a friend searched his apartment, looking for diesel fuel they knew Brueckner kept at home. During this search, Helge claimed to have come across videos in which Brueckner appeared to be sexually assaulting an elderly English-speaking woman and a teenage girl who appeared to be around 13 or 14 years old.

It was later found that Brueckner was charged in 2022 for sex crimes against children committed in Portugal between 2000 and 2017. He is currently serving time for raping an American woman in 2005. Helge stated that he had lost the videos but provided testimony to Scotland Yard, the headquarters of the Metropolitan Police in London, explaining their contents.

Regarding Madeleine’s disappearance, Helge believes it was a burglary gone wrong. He theorizes that Brueckner was planning a burglary, but when things went awry, he stumbled upon the children in the apartment and decided to take Madeleine with him. Helge admitted uncertainty about whether Brueckner eventually killed Madeleine or not. The Metropolitan Police in London are still investigating Madeleine McCann’s disappearance.

Helge expressed regret over stealing the videos from Brueckner’s apartment, considering it the biggest mistake of his life. He shared with the newspaper that he has been struggling emotionally, gaining weight, experiencing episodes of restlessness, and having difficulty sleeping at night. He also mentioned that the German federal police, known as Bundeskriminalamt (BKA), have offered him protection and assistance in hiding.
