Former New York state Democrat Sen. Alessandra Biaggi discussed her student loans and recent home purchase on social media. Biaggi revealed that she graduated from Fordham Law School in 2012 with $180,000 in student loan debt. She has been paying off loans for 11 years and has already paid off two of them completely. However, as of 2023, her remaining balance is $206,000. These comments come almost a year after it was reported that Biaggi and her husband bought a $1.14 million home in New York’s 17th Congressional District, where she hoped to serve in Congress.

A decision by the Supreme Court to strike down President Biden’s student loan-forgiveness plan has sparked debate. The court ruled that the White House did not have the legal authority to provide billions in federal loan forgiveness without clear authorization from Congress. This decision will impact over 40 million low- and middle-income borrowers who were expecting $10,000 in loan forgiveness.

Many social media users criticized Biaggi for not paying off her student loans before buying the expensive home. Some suggested she seek financial advice rather than relying on loan forgiveness plans. The Supreme Court’s decision is seen as a setback for President Biden, who had promised loan forgiveness during his campaign.

Retired marine and talk show host Jesse Kelly highlighted the issue, stating that Biaggi spent more money than she made. The student loan forgiveness plan proposed by President Biden would have cancelled debt for certain borrowers
