Florida police officers fatally shot a woman in an apartment complex after she charged at them with two knives, officials said on Friday.

The woman’s boyfriend called 911, reporting that she was threatening suicide and armed with a knife.

According to investigators, a trained member of the Crisis Negotiation Team spoke with the woman on the phone while officers were dispatched to the scene.

At around 1 p.m., officers specializing in crisis intervention arrived at the Lake Nona apartment complex in Florida and attempted to communicate with the distressed woman.

During the negotiations, the woman exited the apartment holding a knife and then went back inside. She subsequently emerged a second time, brandishing two knives and charging towards the officers, which led them to open fire.

She was pronounced dead at the scene by the Orlando Fire Department.

Authorities confirmed that the officers did not have their tasers in their hands at the time of the shooting.

A spokesperson told Fox 35 that the two officers responsible for the shooting have been put on administrative leave, as per standard protocol for officer-involved shootings. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will also conduct an investigation into the incident.

The deputies were equipped with body cameras, and the footage will be made available to the public within 30 days. The woman’s age and name have not been disclosed by the police or her family.
