At least 951 migrants have died while trying to reach Spain by sea in the first six months of 2023, a Spanish migrant rights group said Thursday.

Caminando Fronteras (Walking Borders) said the total includes 112 women and 49 children. The organization compiles its figures from families of migrants and rescue statistics.

According to a report issued on Thursday, official Spanish figures show a decrease in the number of boats arriving in the first six months, but there were 13 more deaths compared to the same period last year.

The first six months of the year saw 12,192 people arriving by boat in Spain, representing a 4% decline from the previous year.

Caminando Fronteras pointed fingers at countries like Spain and Morocco, blaming them for a lack of coordination and failure to conduct timely rescue operations.

Caminando Fronteras provided an example of an incident on June 21, where 24 people were rescued, two bodies were retrieved, but 36 migrants went missing after their boat sank off the coast of Morocco. The organization criticized the delayed response from Moroccan rescue ships, which arrived ten hours after the first warnings were issued.

Recently, Caminando Fronteras and Alarm Phone reported that a boat carrying 55 migrants, who departed from southern Morocco for Spain’s Canary Islands around June 22, sank. Only four individuals were rescued by Moroccan authorities, with the fate of the others remaining unknown.

No official information about the incident was obtained from Morocco.

The International Organization for Migration’s Missing Migrants Project considered the sinking based on reports from Caminando Fronteras and Alarm Phone, considering them reliable sources that often provide the only available information on such tragedies.

In 2022, Caminando Fronteras reported a total of 2,390 migrant deaths or missing cases in their attempts to reach Spain.
