The University of Cincinnati has required adjunct instructor Melanie Nipper to undergo free speech training after penalizing a student for referencing biological science, as reported by The Cincinnati Enquirer.

Olivia Krolczyk, a student at the University of Cincinnati, posted a TikTok video in which she explained that she received a zero on her project proposal about transgender athletes in women’s sports for using the term “biological women.”

The gender studies professor, Nipper, informed Krolczyk that the terms “biological women” were exclusionary and not allowed in the course as they reinforced heteronormativity. Nipper requested that Krolczyk reassess her topic and focus on women’s rights instead of just “females” to receive a regrading.

“How am I supposed to do my project if I can’t use the term ‘biological women’?” questioned Krolczyk in her TikTok video.

Following this incident, Krolczyk received a new grade and completed the class with an A, while the former professor faced consequences.

The Cincinnati Enquirer obtained a formal reprimand issued by the University of Cincinnati to Melanie Nipper, stating that she had violated school policy. According to the reprimand, Nipper is required to complete training on UC’s free speech policy and submit her syllabi for the upcoming school year to her department head.

The reprimand letter emphasized that this was a formal reprimand and would be recorded in Nipper’s permanent records. It also stated that any future violations of UC policy may result in further disciplinary actions, including termination. Nipper, as an unclassified “at will” employee, was reminded that her employment could be terminated with or without cause.

The letter also demanded Nipper to undergo training on the requirements of the Campus Free Speech Policy and submit all syllabi for review and approval at least two weeks before classes commence.
